Chloe Richards is a small town girl with a big heart. At least, that’s what the local folk of Rosehip Village think. But when her parents turn up on her doorstep asking for help, her secret past is about to be revealed.
Being the daughter of Hollywood royalty was never going to be easy, but at 19, Chloe Richards managed to leave that life behind along with the scandals that almost destroyed her. A fresh start was all she needed, and a fresh start was what she got in Rosehip. Girlfriend of a local bookshop owner, best friends with fiercely loyal café owner and owner of a perfume business herself, Chloe has a happy life. But her parents are about to turn her perfect life on its head. Again.
What do you do when you’re torn between loyalty and protecting yourself? Should you trust your heart when your head is telling you not to?
My opinion.
I'm a massive fan of this cover. It's such a lovely design; quiet and elegant and it couldn't fit the novel behind it better. We meet Chloe at a turning point in her life. As a reader you can only guess as to what it was that made her run. Chloe's past and reasons for leaving her old life behind remain a mystery for the bigger part of the story, but it never bothered me at all. I trusted the blanks would be filled in when necessary - and they were. [NOTE: I only read the blurb when deciding on reading the book, I didn't read it again before actually starting the novel so the course of the story and Chloe's identity was actually a big question mark for me - and I loved it that way. Looking back the blurb might actually give away a bit too much. So my advice: read the novel without the blurb in mind.]
There's something about the charm of an English small town setting that speaks to me every time. And Rosehip wasn't any different. Its people are incredibly kind and loyal, no better place for Chloe to have found herself. But when Chloe's life gets disrupted again, a feeling of unease and dread creeps in. Especially when you feel like you should warn Chloe and protect her when she doesn't see what's coming.Perfume and Promises is an original and sweet read with lots of unexpected turns, a beautiful setting and some delightful characters. I fell in love with the story and Ellen Faith's writing from the very first page.
