Book review: Love Like The Movies - Victoria Van Tiem

Kenzi Shaw knows the plot of her life down to the last line - the career she's building as an up-and-coming marketing exec, the gorgeous fiancé (Bradley) she'll marry in a fairytale wedding, the children they'll raise in her dream home. But when heart-breaking ex Shane comes back into her life, life starts going off the script . . .

Shane tries to win Kenzi over by re-enacting all the rom-com movies they used to watch together - Sleepless in Seattle, Bridget Jones's Diary, Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing to name a few. He's just a guy, standing in front of a girl, asking her to trust him again. But has he really changed? Not only is her head in a spin over Shane, but now her job is on the line. And with her perfect sister-in-law showing up every tiny thing Kenzi does wrong, she feels like she's permanently in the corner.

Should she risk her sensible life for the chance of a Happy Ever After? One thing's certain, when Shane meets Kenzi (again), she's suddenly not so sure who her leading man is . . .

Perfect for fans of From Notting Hill with Love . . . Actually and You Had Me at Hello. Grab some popcorn, hit the sofa and enjoy this feel-good and very funny novel.

My opinion.
What a wonderful book! I loved everything about it: the title, the cover, the blurb,... I was sold from the moment I was introduced to the book and I wasn't disappointed when I finally got to read it. I loved every page. Love Like The Movies is fun, flirty, entertaining, hilarious, sweet,... Kenzi is a wonderful romantic. I definitely recognized myself in her - the perfect main character! As for the hero(es).. Sigh. How dreamy.
Kenzi is forced to take a good honest look at herself, her life, hopes and dreams and I really feel she did that with grace. I loved the typical rom com embarrassing moments, the outbursts and misunderstandings... But mostly I loved how Kenzi handled herself and the decisions she made. She's a very strong woman.
Love Like The Movies had me falling in love with the idea of love and romance all over again, and I can't wait to relive some of those "most romantic moments" on screen. Yes, there will be a rom com movie marathon after this!
Victoria Van Tiem did a brilliant job with this book; I'm already excited for more!

Book review: Falling for Fitz - Katy Regnery (#2 The English Brothers)

"Falling for Fitz" is the second of five books about the Philadelphia-based, wildly-handsome English brothers who are absolutely not on the look-out for love.

(Except Barrett, who fell in love when he was 8-years-old. And Fitz, who met the girl of his dreams at 19. And maybe even Weston, who just doesn't know it yet.)

Fitz English and Daisy Edwards fell in love during one magical summer when they were teenagers.

Years later, they meet again, and both are shocked to discover that the feelings they had THEN are just as deep and real NOW. There's a little snag, however. It seems that Daisy is engaged to someone else, and she's come home to get married.

Can Fitz gets Daisy to fall for him all over again before it's too late? Find out in "Falling for Fitz"!

My opinion.
Oh wow oh wow I'm in LOVE with Fitz! Falling for Fitz is such a sweet, endearing romance... another brilliant one by our one and only Katy... Queen of Romance ;-)
I loved everything about this book. Fitz and Daisy are such amazing main characters, so easy to love and so easy to connect to. Of course it's a classic case of misunderstanding and postponing, but it's so beautifully written. Katy Regnery makes me fall in love with each and every one of her heroes. I think Fitz is my favourite one so far. But I tend to say that after every Katy novel I finish...
Falling for Fitz is the second book in the what's proving to be my favourite romance series yet: The English Brothers. The first book, Breaking Up With Barrett, follows the story of Fitz's brother, Barrett, and the love of his life Emily. Although you'll love Fitz and Daisy just as much without having read Breaking Up With Barrett, I do strongly suggest you read them in order. You'll miss out on some insiders, and there are some big spoilers if you were planning on reading it in a different order.
Falling for Fitz is a wonderfully romantic read you just won't be able to put down.

Mark the date: Falling for Fitz is out 29 July!

All books in The English Brothers series are 50,000 words/200-pages long. The RWA classifies this length as "Short Contemporary Romance."

KATY REGNERY, award-winning romance novelist, has always loved telling a good story and credits her mother with making funny, heartwarming tales come alive throughout her childhood. A lifelong devotee of all romance writing from Edwardian to present-day, it was just a matter of time before Katy tried her hand at writing a love story of her own. As it turned out, one love story turned into a series of five Heart of Montana romances, following the love lives of the Yellowstone-based Lindstrom siblings, their friends and family. Katy is also the author of the Enchanted Places series, launching in January 2014 with Playing for Love at Deep Haven, which will be followed by an additional seven books throughout 2014-2016. In addition to contemporary romance, Katy also writes paranormal romance under the pseudonym K.P. Kelley. It’s You, the story of star-crossed lovers, takes place in northern New England and the forests north of Quebec.Speaking of forests, Katy lives in the relative-wilds of northern Fairfield County, Connecticut where her writing room looks out at the woods and her husband, two young children and two dogs create just enough cheerful chaos to remind her that the very best love stories of all are the messy and unexpected ones.

Book review: High Heels and Bicycle Wheels - Jane Linfoot

Meet Bryony: she’s a fun-loving, very single TV production assistant whose idea of sport is the Jimmy Choo sales scrum.

Meet Jackson: Cycling’s bad boy superstar. Injured and out of a certain race this summer, without his training, he’s looking for another distraction…

Bryony’s facing a triple whammy – her last single friend just named the day, her mother’s offering to have her eggs frozen, and the guy she’s loved from afar, forever, has just got hitched. So she’s more than happy to accept the offer of a totally out of character but seriously steamy one night of no-strings fun. Especially when the guy in question is so attractive he even looks good in Lycra!

Jackson’s on the lookout for a new career but if the opportunity to work on TV means a fortnight with the most uptight woman in the world, he’d rather not bother. He never goes in for seconds – and who in their right mind would head off in a campervan, with a woman who irons her knickers?

Add in a tandem (yes a tandem) and fast forward to double trouble for a summer neither of them will ever forget!

My opinion.
This is the second Jane Linfoot book I had the pleasure of reading. Just like the first one (scroll down to find out more), it was HOT. From the very first page, the heath was on. I was a bit taken aback and I'm not sure I appreciated the full on sex talk right away. Once the story really picked up though, I loved the sexual tension between them. Jane has a brilliant way of describing both sexual longing and the actual 'deed'. Absolutely brilliant.
Jackson is a very arrogant and self confident person. Unfortunately, too much confidence is not something I find particularly attractive in a man. But this just shows again how great Jane's writing is, because even though I would have hated a man like that in real life, I felt every bit of Bryony's (sexual!) attraction for him. As for Bryony... She's not my kind of person either. I never really warmed up to her and I'm sad to say I never really 'got' her. At times she was so frustrating it was almost funny, but if I were Jackson, I would have dumped her in the middle of nowhere with her ironing board and Jimmy Choo collection.
High Heels and Bicycle Wheels is a great, sexy, HOT read by a wonderful author. WARNING: do not(!) read this in public. Be sure you have some privacy and/or a significant other near you.

The wonderful Gosling Girls came up with a great readathon: #SexMeUpReadathon. Find out more about what it stands for here.

Book Tour: Love Like The Movies - Victoria Van Tiem - Q&A

In this irresistible romantic romp, movie fanatic Kensington Shaw is thrown into love—Hollywood-style—when her gorgeous ex presents a series of big screen challenges to win back her heart.

What girl wouldn’t want to experience the Pretty Woman shopping scene? It’s number two on the list. Or, try the lift from Dirty Dancing? It’s number five. One list, ten romantic movie moments, and a handful of shenanigans later, Kenzi has to wonder…should she marry the man her family loves, or risk everything for a love like the movies?

Kenzi Shaw knows the plot of her life down to the last line - the career she's building as an up-and-coming marketing exec, the gorgeous fiancé (Bradley) she'll marry in a fairytale wedding, the children they'll raise in her dream home. But when heart-breaking ex Shane comes back into her life, life starts going off the script . . .

Victoria Van Tiem is the author of LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES. She’s also an artist, black belt, mom of two, wife of one, and resident caretaker of her family zoo—including their beloved, pot-bellied pig, Pobby. Repped by Jenny Bent of The Bent Agency.

Today I have the pleasure to welcome Victoria to M's Bookshelf for a fun little chat!
Welcome, Victoria!

Can you tell us a little about LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES, the main characters and what it's about?

LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES is a fun, romantic romp about living on purpose to our true authentic selves. Kensington is almost thirty, right between the family she wants for herself and the one she’s out grown. Often the vision we have for ourselves is very different than the one our family has crafted for us, and if were not careful, their vision can hold us back and hold us hostage. Love Like The Movies explores this concept through Kensington’s journey.
Shane is Kenzi’s first love, first heartbreak, first everything. He’s *that* guy, the one who always got her at the most basic level. The movies in the LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES list are woven around their story.
Do you have any writing rituals?
Candy. There must be candy within reach. I have a terrible sweet tooth.
Some short fun facts:
Fav. colour? Oh, in general sea foam or ocean blue, but it always depends on where it's applied.
Paperback or Ebook? eBook first, but when I love a book I have to own the paperback.
Which movie genre would you watch on a date? Rom-Com of course!
Tea or coffee? I'm a coffee girl.
Something we don't know about you: I have a pot-bellied pig named Pobby. He started out at 15 lbs and now, fully grown is about 150. He lives outside in his own private barn.
Is there anything you can share about future projects? I do have another Romantic Comedy in the works. It’s a modern retelling of a 1960’s Rom-Com, only with higher stakes, hotter characters, and more confusion. In fact, it’s a truck-load of crazy. But, because at the very heart of this story are real characters and connections, you’re happy to go along for the ride.
I'm very much looking forward to that! Thank you so much for stopping by, Victoria!

Cover reveal: Dangled Carat - Hilary Grossman

I'm so very excited to show you THE BRAND NEW COVER
for Dangled Carat by my wonderful friend Hilary Grossman.
It is absolutely STUNNING!

*** drum roll ***

For every girl who wondered if she should love him or dump him.....

For every girl who listened to her heart instead of her friends advice....

For every girl who l wondered if she was wasting her time dating that guy....

meet Hilary....

She had gotten used to dating the commitment-phobic Marc, thirteen years her senior. They had a great relationship--why rush into things? She saw no need to pressure him for marriage, believing that when the time was right, he would propose. But after they had been together for four years, their friends decided to take matters into their own hands, pushing Marc to propose and making Hilary realize how much she really did want to marry the man that she loved. Unfortunately, Marc still wasn't ready--and their friends' meddling in the form of a faux engagement party led to a disastrous New Year's Eve that brought their relationship to an inevitable turning point.

For anyone who has ever dated a commitment-phobe, who has found their patience wearing thin with the one they love, or who has sat around wondering if he is ever going to pop the question while trying to remain the very picture of patience and grace, Hilary's humorous and honest story will hit home.

"Dangled Carat sparkles with humor and shines with wisdom. It is a gem of a book." - Christina Baker Kline - New York Times Best Selling Author of Orphan Train.

"Fans of Sex and the City - Grossman makes a reference to Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big - will enjoy the story, but its real-girl charm should draw an even wider crowd." - Kirkus Reviews.

MEET HILARY
Hilary Grossman dated a guy so commitment-phobic that she was able to write a book about their relationship.  She has an unhealthy addiction to denim and shoes.  She loves to find humor in every day life.  And she likens life to a game of dodgeball - she tries to keep many balls in the air before they smack her in the face. When she isn't writing or blogging she is the CFO of a beverage alcohol importer.  She lives on Long Island.

Book review: Breaking Up with Barrett - Katy Regnery (#1 The English Brothers)

Breaking Up with Barrett is the first of five books about the Philadelphia-based, wildly-handsome English brothers who are all on the look-out for love.

(Except Alex. He's a womanizing manwhore. And maybe Stratton, because he's wicked hot, but super awkward around girls.)

Barrett English, aka "the Shark," is the fair-haired, first-born of the English brothers, and the CEO of the oldest, most prestigious investment banking firm in Philadelphia. He rules the boardroom with an iron fist, refusing to take no for an answer and always getting his way.

Emily Edwards, a first-year doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, grew up in the gatehouse on the outskirts of Barrett's childhood estate. The daughter of his family's gardener and housekeeper, she was always looking through the window of privilege, but forced to remember her place at the very periphery of the kingdom.

When business partners suggest that a fiancee might soften Barrett's image over business dinners, he approaches Emily for the "job" of fiancee. And while love wasn't necessarily on Barrett's radar, he begins to realize that Emily always has been. But will his take-no-prisoners boardroom tactics work on the heart of the woman he loves?

My opinion.
Another fabulous Katy Regnery romance! Again she succeeded in creating these wonderful characters you just got to love. I really enjoyed reading a love story that had been in the making for years (!), instead of the usual "love/attraction at first sight". Emily and Barrett's story is so wonderfully romantic... What I loved most, I think, is the respect, trust and patience they both had for/in each other.
Emily is such a sweet girl and I really admired her honesty with both herself and Barrett later on. She's more than just the pretty girl next door, daughter of 'the help', and I loved how she stood up for herself by staying true to who she is, with confidence and pride.
Getting to know and love Barrett took a little longer, but I ended up falling for him just the same. Like Emily said it herself, he really is her Mr. Darcy: tough exterior, misunderstood hostility, but so very sexy and romantic underneath.
As always, I'm excited for more!

Book Tour: Sophia's Secret - Julie Ryan

Kat has never understood why she was sent at the age of seven from Greece to live in England with her Aunt Tigi. When she receives an email from her grandmother, the first contact in over twenty years, informing her of her mother’s death, she knows this could be her last chance to find out the truth. Little by little she finds out the shocking facts as her grandmother opens her heart. It seems everyone has a secret to tell, not only her grandmother, as Manoli, her school friend, also harbours a guilty secret. Then there’s a twenty year old mystery to solve as well as a murder and what happened to the missing Church treasure?

My opinion.
Sophia's Secret is thé perfect summer read. Julie Ryan transports you to sunny Greece and takes you on a wonderful journey through different generations.
I absolutely loved finding out more about the islanders' history and how all these different families are linked. Julie introduces us to a lot of different characters, but without it being overwhelming. Sophia's tale of the past isn't interrupted by events of the present, which makes it easy to get absorbed into her story completely. At the very end of the book there were some new 'twists' which weren't really necessary to me (& some events that 'happened' over the years seem a tiny bit far fetched at times), but didn't take away from the main story either.
I'm not a big fan of the cover... I like the picture, but I think it's the font that makes it look a bit amateurish? Sorry!
I really feel as though I know these characters and finding out Kat's family history in Sophia's Secret has been amazing. I absolutely loved reading Sophia's Secret and I would highly (!!) recommend this wonderful summer read!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR. Julie was born and brought up in a mining village near Barnsley in South Yorkshire. She graduated with a BA (hons) in French Language and Literature from Hull University.
